Debonding means taking the braces off. The moment you have all been waiting for! Then impressions for the retainers are made. The appointment takes about an hour. We clean the bonding cement that is visible, not the portion that might be below the swollen gums. The final clean up is accomplished by a hygienist appointment. Warm salt water rinses with good tooth brushing technique will help the gum tissue become healthier.
Mouth models are used to fabricate the retainers needed to be worn.
Wire Fixed Retainers
A wire that holds lower front teeth straight while the bone surrounding those teeth becomes firm, growth is finalized and wisdom teeth decisions are made. It is very common to wear the “fixed retainer” for many years after the braces are removed. Individual specific patient needs will be outlined for you.
Retainers are worn to hold the teeth in the correct position while the supporting bone firms up around the teeth. They are worn full time (24hr/day except for mealtimes) for up to a year, then “Night-time for a life-time”. Failure to wear the retainers as prescribed will result in some slippage of the treated end results.
Oral Hygiene Instruction Prophy and Scaling:
This appointment is completed by our hygienist and is basically a super cleaning of the teeth with specific instructions in proper oral hygiene. At this appointment directions in how to floss and other good oral hygiene home care instruction is given. This cleaning appointment is designed to make sure there is no bonding cement/glue or plaque /tartar left on the teeth.
Lost or Broken Retainers
When broken, some retainers can be repaired depending upon the nature of the break and extent of damage to the retainer. If a retainer is lost, or broken, a new impression will need to be taken and will need to be made at the lab which will incur a fee.
